We chose aluminium for our capsules because it protects the coffee aromas in our Nespresso Grands Crus and is also infinitely recyclable without any loss of quality. Aluminium has many positive sustainability features, and we are working to continuously improve the sustainability of the aluminium used in our capsules through our AluCycle™ Initiative announced in June 2009.

Within the AluCycle™ Initiative there are two major components. The first is to work in partnership with the aluminium industry to ensure best practices in the production and refining of the aluminium used to make our Nespresso capsules. The second is to establish effective capsule retrieval systems on a market-by-market basis.

In June 2009 as part our Ecolaboration™ initiative we are convening the first AluCycle™ Forum together with The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This forum will bring aluminium suppliers, recyclers, non-government organisations, environmental consultancies and other related parties together in order to generate initiatives that will continuously improve the sustainability performance of the aluminium used for the Nespresso capsules. IUCN will facilitate the forum, building on its experience with the mining and metals industry on conservation and biodiversity issues.
